Pre-commissioning Era: PRECOM Unit
The Navy not only has to build
the submarine, they have to build the crew. From 1972 through 1976, many crewmembers helped to build the submarine. Many came to help build the LA and went on to other assignments. Those that stayed on through commissioning became the first crew to deploy the submarine. The journey from PRECOM to a commissioned war ship is a long and tedious one. These photographs follow some of the PRECOM unit crew and their activities.
