Desert 1

In November 1979, militant Iranians stormed the Amercian Embassy in Tehran, Iran and took some sixty Americans as hostages.  In April 1980 the United States launched "Desert 1", a joint services military mission designed to attempt the rescue of those hostages. The mission failed, resulting in the deaths of eight Amercian servicemen when their aircraft collided in the Iranian desert.
